Course Description

English Composition is designed to develop students’ abilities to craft, organize, and express ideas clearly and effectively in their own writing. This course incorporates critical reading, critical thinking, and the writing process, as well as research and the ethical use of sources in writing for the academic community. Extended essays, including a researched argument, are required.

Required Text and Materials

This course uses a new set of digital course materials designed using open educational resources (OER) instead of a traditional textbook. As a student in the course, you have access to all of these materials through each of the course modules and course links. 

Course Goals

Upon completion of the course, students will…

  • compose texts that exhibit appropriate rhetorical choices, including attention to audience, purpose, context, genre, culture, and convention.
  • develop and apply strategies for critical reading, critical thinking, and information literacy.
  • demonstrate a proficiency in locating, evaluating, and analyzing academically appropriate research material.
  • analyze and synthesize researched information to develop and support original claims.
  • develop and advance thesis-driven compositions in an organized progression with appropriate supporting information.
  • engage in writing as a process through invention, multiple drafts, collaboration, reflection, revision, and editing.
  • employ correct techniques of style, formatting, and documentation when incorporating quotes, paraphrases, and summaries from sources into compositions.
  • produce texts that demonstrate control over style and writing conventions, including sentence variety and complexity, word choice, tone, punctuation, grammar, usage, and spelling.

    Grading/Evaluation

    All grades will be maintained in IvyLearn’s online grade book. Students are responsible for tracking their progress by referring to the online grade book. Students can generally expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the assignment due date. If exceptions occur, the instructor may notify students of changes to this expectation.

    ** Please note, the high school grading scale may be different from the Ivy Tech grading scale. The Ivy Tech grade for the course will be assigned based on the percentages above. A different high school grade might be assigned on a student's high school transcript if the grading scale percentages are different.

    Types of Assignments

    Major Writing Projects (Rough Drafts and Final Drafts) 

    There will be 3 major writing projects, each going through a process of rough draft, revision, and final draft. The 3 major writing projects are Summary / Response,  Rhetorical or Comparative Analysis, and Researched Argument. There will also be a final writing reflection at the end of the course. 

    Peer Response 

    There will be 2 peer response discussions, during which students will give each other feedback on their drafts in progress. Each student will be responsible for posting their assigned half draft and then replying to the specified number of other students as stated on the peer response rubric.

    Discussions

    There will be 8 discussions for this class.  Each student will be responsible for responding to the prompt for that discussion and then replying to the specified number of other students as stated in the discussions rubric.

    Technology Requirements 

    Students will require a computer device with headphones, a microphone, webcam, up-to-date Chrome Web Browser, and access to YouTube. Please review the Indiana Online’s Technology Requirements.

    Technical Skills Needed 

    Basic technology skills necessary to locate and share information and files as well as interact with others in a Learning Management System (LMS), include the ability to

    • download, edit, save, convert, and upload files
    • download and install software
    • use a messaging service similar to email
    • communicate with others in online discussion or message boards, following basic rules of netiquette
    • open attachments shared in messages
    • create, save, and submit files in commonly used word processing program formats and as a PDF
    • save a file as a .pdf
    • copy and paste and format text using your mouse, keyboard, or an html editor’s toolbar menu
    • insert images or links into a file
    • search for information within a document using Ctrl+F or Command+F keyboard shortcuts
    • work in multiple browser windows and tabs simultaneously
    • activate a microphone or webcam on your device, and record and upload or link audio and/or video files
    • use presentation and graphics programs
    • follow an online pacing guide or calendar of due dates
    • use spell-check, citation editors, and tools commonly provided in word processing tool menus
    • create and maintain usernames and passwords
