Calculator
This class will require the use of a calculator to solve many problems. You must be able to efficiently and effectively use their calculators - especially for the Exams.
- A scientific calculator like the TI-30XS Multiview is suggested.
- A graphing calculator is not necessary, but may be used
- A Computer Algebra System-type calculator like the TI-NSpire is not allowed.
- No phone/watch/Internet-ready device calculators.
- Desmos calculator is not allowed on exams.
Course Goals
Upon completion of the course, students will…
- convert between degree measure and radian measure.
- find trigonometric function values of any angle expressed in degree or radian measure.
- solve right triangles.
- solve oblique triangles using the laws of sine and cosine.
- use and apply properties of vectors.
- graph trigonometric functions.
- utilize trigonometric identities.
- solve trigonometric equations.
- convert between rectangular and polar coordinate systems.
- apply the properties of complex numbers in rectangular and polar forms.
- determine the features of a conic section from a standard equation.
- graph circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas.
- use the above principles to solve practical applications.
- use a scientific calculator proficiently.
- use computer technology which may include the Internet, the Web, email, or computer tutorials to enhance the course objectives.
Topical Areas of Study
- Complex numbers
- Angles and trigonometric functions
- Rational functions
- Right and oblique triangles
- Rectangular and polar coordinates
- Vectors
- Graphs of trigonometric functions
- Trigonometric equations and identities
- Conics
Grading/Evaluation
All grades will be maintained in IvyLearn’s online grade book. Students are responsible for tracking their progress by referring to the online grade book. Students can generally expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the assignment due date. If exceptions occur, the instructor may notify students of changes to this expectation.
Letter Grade | Percentage |
---|---|
A | 90%-100% |
B | 80%-89% |
C | 70%-79% |
D | 60-69% |
F | <60% |
** Please note, the high school grading scale may be different from the Ivy Tech grading scale. The Ivy Tech grade for the course will be assigned based on the percentages above. A different high school grade might be assigned on a student's high school transcript if the grading scale percentages are different.
Types of Assignments
Type 1 Discussion Boards - 6
Each discussion will encourage students to interact with each other and the instructor. The standard intro discussion will be rolled into the first discussion in Module 1.
Type 2 Activities/Instr Choice (Reading and Video)
Each Reading/Video assignment assures the module and course objectives are reviewed by the student. Instructors have the freedom to develop assignments in conjunction with the objectives. This can include activities, worksheets or projects.
Type 3 Homework
Each homework assignment provides graded practice for students to allow for comprehension of modules and course objectives. Students will get unlimited attempts at each question providing for more interaction and practice with the material. Knowledge Checks are not time, but have due dates.
Type 4 Quizzes
Each quiz covers multiple objectives in line with modules in the course. Each quiz varies in the number of questions and total points. Each quiz has a 30 minute time limit. Quizzes may include multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions.
Type 5 Proctored Exams
There are two proctored exams for this course_ a Mid-term Exam during Module 4 and the Final Exam during Module 8. The Final Exam is not cumulative and will only cover info covered after the Mid-term Exam.
Each Exam will make up 30% of your overall course grade. Each Exam will have 25 questions and a 2 hour time limit. Students will be required to upload their work.
The assessments for this asynchronous course are weighted as follows
Assessments | Percentage of Final Grade |
---|---|
Discussions | 5% |
Homework | 15% |
Quizzes | 20% |
Midterm Exam | 30% |
Final Exam | 30% |
Total | 100% |
