Course Description

An introductory course in Spanish. Focuses on developing students’ capacity to use the language and to appreciate Spanish-speaking cultures. Emphasis is placed on skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar acquisition. 

Required Text and Materials

This course uses Lumen Waymaker course materials. There is no additional textbook requirement for this course. All material is included within the course modules.

Course Goals

Upon completion of the course, students will…

• master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar.
• understand simple oral communication about familiar topics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, the weather and the calendar, descriptions of people, clothing, and leisure activities.
• speak in simple sentences about specific topics with enough accuracy to be understood by a native speaker of the language.
• ask and answer questions on everyday topics in the present tense.w
• write simple standard expressions, complete sentences and short paragraphs.
• read and discuss simple paragraphs and articles which may include cultural and literary works.
• demonstrate understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
• demonstrate understanding of the geography of the Spanish-speaking world.

Grading/Evaluation

All grades will be maintained in IvyLearn’s online grade book. Students are responsible for tracking their progress by referring to the online grade book. Students can generally expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the assignment due date. If exceptions occur, the instructor may notify students of changes to this expectation.

** Please note, the high school grading scale may be different from the Ivy Tech grading scale. The Ivy Tech grade for the course will be assigned based on the percentages above. A different high school grade might be assigned on a student's high school transcript if the grading scale percentages are different.

Types of Assignments

Discussion Boards

There will be four (4) Discussions for this class and are listed in the calendar. Discussion board (DB) forums in IvyLearn are based on individual student postings and discussion topics selected by the instructor. In addition to writing an original posting for each DB assignment, students are also expected to post a response to, at least, two (2) of their classmates. Discussion Board 1 is worth 55 points and the other 3 are worth 45 points. Discussion Boards must be answered in Spanish, including responses. Each student will be responsible for responding to the prompt for that discussion and then replying to their peers as stated in the discussion instructions and the rubric, which can be found in each discussion under "Show Rubric" in the three dot menu. 

Study Plans (Assignments and Quizzes)

There will be six (6) Study Plans where the students will complete a varying number of assignments. These assignments include recordings and writing assignments, vocabulary quizzes, and grammar quizzes. All these assignments will be completed in IvyLearn. Each student will have one attempt and some quizzes will require grading from your instructor (such as in the case of essay, short answer, file response, and other types of questions that require instructor grading). Students should allow themselves ample time to complete each quiz as they will get only one attempt. 

Pruebas (Tests)

There will be six (6) Pruebas (Tests) where the students will complete it s after completing the Study Plan. All these assignments will be completed in IvyLearn. Each student will have one attempt and some tests will require grading from your instructor (such as in the case of essay, short answer, file response, and other types of questions that require instructor grading). Students should allow themselves ample time to complete each test as they will get only one attempt. 

Writing Assignments

There will be four (4) Writing Assignments. Students will complete a Spanish writing assignment, which will be submitted via IvyLearn.  Complete and detailed instructions for the writing assignments can be found in the Modules in IvyLearn.

Voice Boards

There will be six (6) Voice Boards. Students will submit a Voice Board and a response to, at least, two (2) of their classmates. The instructor will have the opportunity to address the oral language skills of the students.  Complete and detailed instructions for the voice boards will be found in the Modules in IvyLearn. 

Final Written Exam

At the end of the semester there will be a comprehensive written final exam covering all grammar lessons for the seven Study Plans. The final exam will be available in IvyLearn by the beginning of the last week. This test is 60 minutes long. Complete and detailed instructions for this written exam will be found in Module 8 in IvyLearn.

Final Oral Exam

At the end of the semester there will be a Final Oral Exam of  lessons learned. Students will video-record themselves verbally answering the questions. The oral exam is for the students to demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of the subject matter. It is primary purpose is for the students to demonstrate speaking and interpersonal communication skills.

Technology Requirements 

Students will require a computer device with headphones, a microphone, webcam, up-to-date Chrome Web Browser, and access to YouTube. Please review the Indiana Online’s Technology Requirements.

Technical Skills Needed 

Basic technology skills necessary to locate and share information and files as well as interact with others in a Learning Management System (LMS), include the ability to

• download, edit, save, convert, and upload files
• download and install software
• use a messaging service similar to email
• communicate with others in online discussion or message boards, following basic rules of netiquette
• open attachments shared in messages
• create, save, and submit files in commonly used word processing program formats and as a PDF
• save a file as a .pdf
• copy and paste and format text using your mouse, keyboard, or an html editor’s toolbar menu
• insert images or links into a file
• search for information within a document using Ctrl+F or Command+F keyboard shortcuts
• work in multiple browser windows and tabs simultaneously
• activate a microphone or webcam on your device, and record and upload or link audio and/or video files
• use presentation and graphics programs
• follow an online pacing guide or calendar of due dates
• use spell-check, citation editors, and tools commonly provided in word processing tool menus
• create and maintain usernames and passwords
