The Great Blooket Battle!

In the world of online learning, there’s a common misconception that classrooms are quiet, sterile environments where students are just names on a screen. If you spent five minutes in Joy Allen’s 6th-grade Science class, you’d know that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In this blog, we’re highlighting a classroom story that perfectly captures the “magic” of digital education: The Great Blooket Battle.

The Challenge: Students vs. Leadership

Reviewing the properties of Mass might sound like a ‘heavy’ lift, but Ms. Allen’s students turned the laws of physics into a high-stakes competition, turning this lesson into one of the most inspiring and memorable moments of her career. Students were all abuzz with excitement to test their knowledge in a game of Blooket. They didn’t just want to review; they wanted a showdown. With a surge of excitement, the class issued a formal invitation—and a playful challenge—to a very special guest: Mrs. Bardack, the Assistant Director of Indiana Online.

To the students’ absolute delight, Mrs. Bardack didn’t decline with a “maybe next time.” She accepted the invitation and jumped straight into the fray! But the students didn’t go easy on her. Despite her best efforts to keep up with the laws of mass and volume, the 6th graders proved to be the ultimate Blooket masters—leaving the Assistant Director in the digital dust.

“Watching them battle it out—and seeing the students’ faces as they climbed past Mrs. Bardack on the leaderboard—was a perfect reminder of why I love what I do,” Joy shares.

The result? A high-energy, laugh-filled review session where the students got to engage with Indiana Online leadership and each other in the online learning environment.  It was a perfect blend of academic rigor and pure, competitive joy.

What Makes This Class Special?

While the Blooket battle was an unforgettable highlight, it was just a microcosm of why this specific group is so special. Every single day, they bring an unmatched, dynamic energy to the online classroom. They are the kind of students who consistently:

  • Own the Mic: These 6th graders aren’t just passive listeners. They are quick to hop on their microphones to explain concepts to one another and ask those brilliant, inquisitive questions that keep a teacher on their toes.
  • Share Their Lives: From proudly displaying their latest artwork to introducing beloved pets on camera, these students have turned a digital platform into a genuine community.
  • Lead with Curiosity: They’ve built a foundation where curiosity is celebrated, making every lesson feel like a shared discovery.

Why It Matters

Moments like this remind us that online learning is about far more than just clicking through slides. It’s about building relationships that bridge the digital divide. Through gaming, sharing personal milestones, and even challenging the Assistant Director to a match, Joy and her students are proving that connection is the best catalyst for education.

As Joy puts it: “This class has built a beautiful foundation of curiosity and joy, and it is a group I genuinely look forward to seeing on a daily basis.”

Whether they are measuring mass or climbing the Blooket leaderboard, Joy and her 6th graders are proving that the heart of teaching is always a rewarding adventure.

Keep up the amazing work, 6th Grade!
