Sixth Grade Visual Arts Middle is based on the Indiana Academic Standards for Visual Arts. Students in the middle-level program build on the sequential learning experiences of the elementary program that encompass art history, criticism, aesthetics, and production. Students will study and create art, including landscapes, portraits, sculptures, and collages, and explore various art materials. Students will learn the elements and principles of art such as color, line, shape, form, texture, space, balance, and repetition. Students will compare and interpret works of art from many various art movements. They will be able to create works of art by selecting subject matter, elements, composition, media, and techniques to communicate an idea, mood, or feeling.

This course is an introduction to basic music notation, music vocabulary and concepts, and the differences in genre, instrumentation and style. Students will learn to be musically literate through learning to read music on the staff and also through understanding how composers communicate ideas through their works. Activities, assignments, quizzes, and discussions all reinforce growth in understanding of basic music and music concepts. The class is divided into basic music notation and theory, instruments and their families, historic periods and genres, and music appreciation and advocacy.

Students in grade seven understand that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only changed from one form into another or transferred from place to place. Students understand energy in relationship to solids, liquids, gasses, and heat transfer. Students describe how earth processes have shaped the topography of the earth and have made it possible to measure geological time. Students understand the natural processes of the earth and understand how the earth is constantly changing. Students understand the cellular structure of living organisms, from single-celled to multicellular. The science and engineering processes as well as engineering opportunities are integrated with content throughout the course. This semester, students in grade 7 study the Earth’s history, investigating the different eras, evidence for these divisions, and the events that defined each era. Students distinguish between nonrenewable and renewable resources, their formation and how we use them on a daily basis. Students describe the smallest component of living organisms, the cell. They will discuss different types of cells and the smaller organelles that perform the functions of those cells. Students then describe how cells work together to form tissues, then organs, organ systems and organisms. The science and engineering processes as well as engineering opportunities are integrated with content throughout the course. Along with the current academic standards for this subject, the Science/Technical Studies Content Area Literacy Standards are incorporated with the expectation of a continuum of reading and writing skills development.

Ethnic Studies is a course designed to view the historical development and experiences of various cultures and trace the path of how things came to be for those groups today. To understand the entire story of Ethnic Studies, it is crucial to understand the origins of race. It is important to understand the stories of those who have been on the other side of the history books, and to grasp their perspective of how things have played out. This course is designed to examine the histories of four major ethnicities in the United States - African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. We will look at the origins of each group and look at why they came to the United States (or how they were affected by those who came to the United States), the policies that shaped their historical experiences, and how each ethnicity has emerged from this process. We will study some of the key figures from each group, and the struggles they went through (and continue to go through) to gain equality, respect, and a voice in American society for their people. Ethnic Studies is intended to open your eyes to the varying experiences of those who have been marginalized in American history and to understand how their story fits into the American story. Only by understanding the experiences of the past can we begin to grasp the events of today and shape the world to be a better place in the future.

In this engaging semester of Geography and History of the World, we will study how revolutions, conflicts, and globalization shape human experiences. First, we will look at both violent and non-violent revolutions, examining their historical importance and how they changed societies around the globe. Then, we will investigate different international conflicts, exploring the political, economic, and territorial reasons behind them, as well as how peacekeeping groups try to resolve these issues. We will also focus on the growth of global trade and how our world is becoming more connected. The ultimate goal of a music theory course is to develop the student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. This course will continue to develop the student’s aural skills, knowledge of musical notation, review rhythmic and melodic techniques gained from a beginning course in Music Theory. The course will place more emphasis on harmonic analysis, textures and composition skills. Students will have lessons in ear training, basic rhythmic and melodic sight-singing, orchestration, transposition, and harmonic voice-leading, as well as orchestration and arranging.
The understanding and analysis of music is coupled with exercises in the tonal relationships of pitches (ear training) and exercises in the temporal relationships of pitches (rhythm). All the palpable elements of music, intensity, frequency, texture, form and style are approached through listening, analysis, performance and creation. In addition, Music Theory students gain valuable practical experience in simple keyboard skills, arranging and transposing for instruments and voices, and composing in limited but strictly defined forms.

Pre-Calculus: Algebra

Pre-Calculus is an extension of the material studied in an Algebra II course. The driving topic is the study of functions and their properties. Linear, quadratic and higher degree polynomial functions as well as logarithmic and exponential functions are studied and applied. Conic sections and parametric functions are explored in detail. The course concludes with an overview of sequences and series.
Pre-Calculus: Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the study of side and angle relationships in triangles and their applications as well as the properties of trigonometric functions. Memorization of the common values of the trigonometric ratios on the unit circle provides a strong foundation for the rest of the course. Trigonometry in right triangles is studied initially and extended into non-right triangles using the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines. Graphs of trigonometric functions are explored including applications. Trigonometric identities are verified and used to solve equations. The concept of polar coordinates is introduced and applied to the topic of complex numbers.

Principles of Broadcasting 1

Students will learn about important innovations like AM and FM radio, satellite transmission, and internet streaming. The course also covers the role of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in setting rules for media, making sure broadcasters act ethically, and keeping the public safe with systems like the Emergency Alert System.
Students will also explore how digital recording, editing software, and streaming platforms have changed the way we create and share content. The time frame of the second semester of United States History begins with the study of WWII and continues through the 20th century to the present.
